Gianmarco Griffini, the RECREATE Project Coordinator and an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, is one of the authors of a recent article that details the development of a series of bio-based epoxy vitrimers. The research involved crosslinking diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and bio-based 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) at different molar ratios, which resulted in materials that exhibit self-healing, thermoformability, and mechanical recycling properties.
This research provides the first example of bio-based epoxy vitrimers incorporating FDCA, making these systems of primary importance in the field of reversible, high-performance epoxy materials for future circular economy scenarios.
